“So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.”
Luke 15:20

Poet Robert Frost once wrote, “Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” There’s humor in that line, but also a deep truth:

There really is no place like home.

No matter how badly we’ve messed up or how heavy life’s disappointments feel, home is where love can still be safe and strong.

Jesus told a story about a son who blew it—squandered everything his father gave him, ended up broke, broken, and so hungry he longed for scraps meant for animals. Then one day, reality hit. He thought of home. He knew he didn’t deserve to go back, but he turned his feet that way anyway. That’s always where healing begins—leaving behind what’s destroying us and choosing to go home. That’s repentance.

But here’s the breathtaking part—before the son even reached the door, his father saw him from far away. Moved with compassion, the father sprinted to him, threw his arms around him, kissed him, and welcomed him with a robe and a feast fit for a king.

This isn’t just a story; it’s a picture of God’s heart. The father is God. The wayward son is you and me.

It’s a vivid reminder that no sin is so deep, no failure so final, that God’s mercy can’t cover it. When we take the first step home, God runs the rest of the way.
