“But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8
Have you ever loved someone who didn’t love you back? Or maybe cared deeply for someone who walked away? It’s one of the hardest kinds of pain– the sting of rejection. But there’s a story in the Bible that takes that pain and turns it into a picture of God’s unbelievable love.
It’s found in the book of Hosea– one of the most surprising stories in all of Scripture. God told the prophet Hosea to marry a woman with a terrible reputation. She was known for her unfaithfulness and promiscuity, yet Hosea obeyed God and married her. After a few years and three children, she left him– walked out on the marriage and ended up trapped in a life of prostitution.
And then, in a shocking twist, God told Hosea to go find her and take her back. He even had to pay for her freedom. You can almost imagine Hosea standing there, buying back the woman who had betrayed him.
Why would God ask such a thing?
Because Hosea’s love for his wife was meant to be a living picture of God’s relentless love for us.
That’s exactly what Paul reminds us of in Romans 5:8: “But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” When Paul wrote those words, he wanted believers in Rome to understand that God didn’t wait for us to clean up our act before loving us. While we were still rebelling against Him– while we were still running in the opposite direction– Christ went to the cross for us.
Like Hosea’s relentless love, God’s love pursues us even when we’ve wandered away. He redeems us, not because we deserve it, but because His love never gives up.
So, if you’ve ever thought you were too far gone or too broken for God to love you, think again. The story of Hosea– and the story of the cross– prove otherwise. Jesus paid the price to bring you home.
And that’s love you can build your life on.
Tomorrow, we’ll look at another takeaway in part two of this incredible love story.
