“As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. ‘Tell us,’ they said, ‘when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?’ Jesus answered: ‘Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.’”’ – Matthew 24: 3-5
Most people are interested in the future.
Whether it’s wishing we could see five years down the road to determine which career path to take, or to see if our relationship survives this tough season, we all would like to prepare for what the future holds.
The disciples were no different. In fact, they asked Jesus to provide a little insight into what to expect regarding His second coming and the End Times. So, Jesus shared some signs to keep in mind.
The first sign will be an increase in false prophets and teachers. Now, false prophets and teachers are not new. In 135 AD, Shimon Bar-Kokhba was believed by many to be the Messiah when he led a Jewish revolt against Rome. He was defeated and killed. He wasn’t the first false teacher, nor will he be the last. These false “Christs” will only increase in number as we move closer to the End Times.
The Bible is absolutely clear that today, we are living in the End Times. In fact, the beginning of the end began way back when Jesus rose from the dead, and the disciples were supernaturally empowered by the Holy Spirit. Ever since then, each passing day brings us closer to the end. Jesus describes these signs as “birth pangs,” increasing in intensity as the end draws nearer.
Is there any good news in all this doom and gloom?
Absolutely! Even as the world falls further into chaos, we can be sure that nothing surprises Jesus.
God remains in control today, tomorrow – even until the end of days.
