“He is the one you praise; He is your God…” Deuteronomy 10:21
A sudden thunderstorm once stopped Swedish pastor Carl Boberg in his tracks. Lightning flashed, rain poured, and the wind roared. As quickly as it came, the storm passed, the sun broke through, and a church bell rang in the distance.
Moved by God’s power and beauty, Boberg wrote the words to How Great Thou Art.
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Creation points us to the greatness of God — but the greatest wonder isn’t found in thunder or stars. It’s found in the cross. God sent His Son to pay the penalty of our sins so we could be forgiven and made right with God.
That’s what Moses reminded Israel of. God had rescued them, sustained them, and performed “great and awesome wonders” before their eyes. Their response was praise.
Our story isn’t so different. God has carried us through storms, too. He has provided, protected, forgiven, and redeemed.
So pause today. Remember what He’s done. And let your heart respond in worship: How great Thou art.
