“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
Ask most 20-somethings to name their biggest fears, and you’ll notice a few themes: career uncertainty, financial pressures compounded by giant student debt, and relationship stress.
After a few years, it’s not uncommon for that the once idealistic, world-changer mentality to have crumbled under the daily grind.
What does the future hold?
Will everything work out in the end?
Thankfully, for the Jesus follower, we know that no matter what ups or downs we face in life, God remains in control. As we reflect on God’s promises to Israel during an uncertain future, let’s take a look at a few of God’s promises to help hold onto hope while navigating the uncertainty of life:
- “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
- “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” Philippians 1:6
- “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13
- “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21
With so much unrest in our world, we can all be concerned about what the future holds. It can be a scary, uncertain place, but God says, “I will never leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5b
We can’t know the future, but we know the One who does, and that can give us the confidence to face whatever comes next.
