“The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” James 5:16
If we’re honest, most of us don’t struggle with whether we can pray.
We struggle with whether our prayers actually matter.
We pray… but nothing seems to change.
We ask… but don’t see results.
And over time, we begin to wonder if our prayers are really doing anything at all.
Scripture says they are.
But it also tells us something important:
The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
Not just any prayer—effective prayer.
That raises a hard question:
What makes a prayer effective?
It’s not volume.
It’s not length.
It’s not using the right words.
It’s the condition of the heart. It’s submission to Christ. Trusting and obeying His Word.
Righteousness doesn’t mean perfection. It means alignment. It means you’re walking with God, not just talking to Him. It means your life is not pulling in one direction while your prayers are asking for another.
You cannot live disconnected from God and expect a deep connection with Him in prayer.
And that’s where many of us feel the tension.
We want powerful prayers… but we don’t always want a surrendered life.
Most of all, we don’t really want a righteous life.
Yet the power of prayer is not found in what you say.
It’s found in how closely you walk with the One you’re speaking to in obedience.
