A PRAYER FOR OUR NATION

“And My people who are called by My name humble themselves, pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

As we celebrate Independence Day, we have much for which to be grateful. We enjoy freedoms that many people around the world can only imagine. We can gather with family, worship openly, and reflect on God’s many blessings.

At the same time, this holiday gives us an opportunity to do more than celebrate—it gives us an opportunity to pray.

When we look at our nation, it is easy to become concerned about division, immorality, and godlessness in our land. We may be tempted to think the answer is found in a political leader, a certain political ideology, or a cultural shift. But throughout Scripture, God points His people somewhere else. He points us back to Him.

In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God does not begin with the nation. He begins with His people. He calls on the church to humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our sin. Genuine spiritual awakening has always begun when God’s people recognize their need for repentance. A change of mind that leads to change in how we live.

Before we focus on what needs to change in our nation, we should ask what God wants to change within us. Before we point to the failures of lost people, we should allow Him to search our own hearts.

Our hope is not found in Washington. Our hope is found in Jesus Christ. He is still changing lives, restoring families, and drawing people to Himself. As we pray for our nation, may we turn from our wicked ways in the churchin us– and truly repent. Then, God will forgive us of our sin and heal our land.
