“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.” Hebrews 13:17a

Submission isn’t popular.

It sounds outdated or even dangerous in a world that values independence. We worry that someone will take advantage of us.

But Scripture calls us to a different rhythm—one where submission to godly leadership is not a sign of weakness but of wisdom. This is a powerful word about submitting to spiritual leaders in the church and Christian ministries.

The Christian life isn’t meant to be a solo endeavor. God places leaders in our lives—pastors, mentors, spiritual guides—not to control us but to shepherd us. When we resist every form of authority, we’re not just dodging accountability; we’re disobeying God.

Notice that this verse also places a serious responsibility on the leader. Spiritual leaders will one day give an account to God for the way they cared for those entrusted to them. Biblical submission, therefore, is never permission for manipulation or abuse. It flourishes when leaders humbly follow Christ, faithfully teach His Word, and genuinely seek the good of those they serve.

Yes, all leaders are imperfect. Sadly, some fall. If a leader misleads us contrary to Scripture, choose God over the leader. And yes, caution is needed. But when we are part of a Christ-centered community and under godly leadership, submitting is an act of trust in God’s design.

Want to encourage your leaders? Obey joyfully. Follow faithfully. Your willingness to follow well can refresh and strengthen the very people who have to answer to God on your behalf.
