“They opened their treasure chests and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11
Giving and Christmas go hand in hand. We wrap gifts, exchange smiles, and hope we picked the right thing. But have you ever stopped to wonder where the tradition of giving at Christmas really came from?
It didn’t begin with Santa Claus. It began with worship.
When the wise men finally reached Bethlehem, they didn’t come empty-handed. They brought gifts that revealed something much deeper than generosity. Their gifts told the truth about who Jesus is.
Gold was a gift worthy of a king. It proclaimed something few yet fully understood: Jesus was royalty. Not a pretend king. Not a symbolic king. He is the King of kings.
Frankincense was used by priests in worship. The gift spoke of Jesus as our High Priest, the One who mediates between a Holy God and sinful humanity. Through Him, we now have access to the Father.
But then there was myrrh—a strange gift for a newborn. Myrrh was used for burial. This gift whispered something sobering and holy: Jesus was born to die. He would one day give His life to pay the penalty for our sin—death.
King. Priest. Savior.
Three gifts. One Man – the God-man – Jesus.
And these wise men didn’t just deliver gifts—they bowed in worship. That’s what gift-giving was always meant to point toward. Christmas is not about what we give to one another nearly as much as it is about what God has given to us.
So this Christmas, what are you giving to Jesus that shows you worship Him over all?
