From a sermon by Bryant Wright, Founder, RFTH
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
Colossians 3:1-2
When we come to faith in Christ, we are forgiven of our sins and raised to new life in Him.
This transformation, symbolized in baptism, is a powerful reality for believers. Just as Jesus died and was raised to life, so we, too, die to our old ways and are raised to walk in a new way. But this change doesn’t happen automatically. It requires us to focus on Jesus and the life He has called us to live.
Paul’s words in Colossians remind us that we must set our hearts and minds on things above—on Christ and His kingdom. In our busy, distracted lives, focusing on earthly concerns like careers, finances, or relationships is easy. These things are not inherently bad, but when they become our primary focus, they take our attention away from Christ. By looking up and keeping our eyes on Jesus, we are empowered to live in a way that reflects His love, grace, and truth. We find the power of new life in Christ.
This doesn’t mean that we should neglect the responsibilities and people in our lives. Instead, it means that our priorities shift. We live with eternity in mind, knowing that we belong to Christ and He is our source of strength and hope.
When we focus on Him, we are better equipped to navigate life’s challenges when it comes to careers, finances, or relationships.
Take time today to refocus your heart and mind on Jesus and allow His power to guide your thoughts, words, and actions.
