THE LIFE-GIVING NOURISHMENT OF SALVATION

From a sermon by George Wright

“Like newborn infants long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation – if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 2:2-3

How can we avoid sin? How can we be victorious over the sin that so easily trips us up and causes us to drift away from our life and identity in Christ?

Peter says the answer is the gospel! The same good news that saved you and called you a new creation is the good news that sustains you and causes you to grow more and more like Christ. Never get over the joy of what you have received!

Just like a newborn infant longs for his or her mother’s milk, followers of Christ long for the pure spiritual milk, which is the joy of salvation. Jesus Christ has done for you what you could never do for yourself. He has called you out. He has chosen you to be an elected ambassador of His grace. So, Christian, preach the Gospel to yourself every day. As you do, you will taste and see that the Lord is good and will understand nothing in this life compares to his amazing gift of grace.

Did you know Peter drew on Psalm 34 in this verse? I love how Peter teaches us to think and pray Scripture. Psalm 34 is a psalm of deliverance written by David to express his gratitude for the grace and mercy he has received. It is a psalm of a broken man who knows he has been rescued and restored.

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look on him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him from all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” Psalm 34:4-8

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! This is the pure, life-giving nourishment of salvation and is so much better than anything this world can offer. It is the antidote to malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. As ambassadors of Christ, it equips us to share the life-changing message of the Gospel everywhere we go!
