“Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls…”  Psalm 42:7

There is something uniquely powerful and beautiful about the sounds of rushing water.

Whether it’s a rushing mountain waterfall, the crash of ocean waves, or a steady summer rain, these sounds do more than relax me. They speak to something within me that words often fail to reach. They stir my soul.

It’s no wonder Scripture uses this imagery to describe a spiritual reality. When the psalmist writes, “Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls,” he’s expressing an ache—one that goes beyond surface emotions. It’s the cry of the soul, longing for the only One who can truly satisfy.

We’re made in the image of God, which means we’re wired for more than what this world offers. But life has a way of numbing that inner longing. The noise of daily responsibilities, disappointments, and even the distractions of success can drown out the deeper call inside us. Still, that yearning doesn’t go away. And in quiet moments—or painful ones—it rises up again. That’s the “deep” in us calling out for the “deep” in God.

Romans 8:26 reminds us that even when we don’t know how to pray, “the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” That’s God meeting us in the depths—not with condemnation, but with compassion. He doesn’t require polished prayers or perfect understanding. He responds to honesty. To hunger. To the quiet surrender of a soul that knows it needs Him.

That’s the beauty of the gospel. God not only created us to know Him, but made a way for that relationship to be restored through Jesus. The Spirit is constantly drawing us back, not out of guilt, but out of love. A love so vast, it moves toward us even when we feel lost in the current of life’s chaos.

Psalm 42:8 offers a promise: “The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and His song will be with me in the night.” Even when the burdens feel relentless, His love is steady. His song is like rushing water—even in the dark. He soothes the soul.

So next time you hear the roar of a waterfall or the gentle rhythm of rain, let it remind you: God is near.

You can embrace with assurance that He will listen to the “deep” cry of your heart.

And He will answer.
