FINDING PURPOSE IN GOD’S WORD

July 12, 2024

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12

What’s your go-to book?

Maybe you’re into gripping novels that keep you on the edge of your seat, or perhaps you prefer diving into a fascinating biography. Well, I’ve got something that tops them all – the Bible.

Yeah, I know what you might be thinking. “The Bible? Written by ordinary men with little application for today? Really?” But hear me out. The Bible isn’t just another book designed to gather dust on your shelf. It’s alive and dynamic and has the incredible power to bring purpose and meaning to your life.

Check out Hebrews 4:12, our scripture for today’s devotion: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Whoa! What a claim! It is alive and active. It speaks to our souls. It reveals who we are. It knows our motives and hearts. This is why so many people – maybe even you – stay away from it. It is so revealing, so true, and trustworthy. And deep down, we know it.

For believers, spending time with the Bible isn’t just a routine. It’s a game-changer. Ever been in a worship service where the preacher’s words hit you right in the heart? That’s the time when the preacher is the messenger of God’s Word. It’s not the preacher’s ideas but God’s Word. It’s the Word of God in action, renewing your faith, convicting you of sin, and then restoring your spirit through the love and grace of God in Christ.

But even for those who haven’t quite bought into the whole ‘Jesus thing,’ the Bible still stirs something up inside. It might make you uncomfortable, challenge your beliefs, or even provoke a little anger. But hey, that’s the active life of God’s Word.

So, here’s the thing – I urge you to give the Bible a chance to work its power in your life. It’s not just about owning a fancy leather-bound copy or scrolling through verses on your phone. It’s about letting those words sink deep into your soul, transforming you from the inside out.

It’s worth spending time in God’s word, for it is the means God uses to speak to us. It’s worth waking up a little earlier to spend time with God or tuning in to that Bible podcast during your commute and memorizing those verses that speak straight to your heart.

Very soon, you’ll experience its power. For it is God’s power speaking right to you.
