“Therefore, you grieve now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one
will take your joy away from you.” John 16:22
Grief has a way of stopping life in its tracks. One moment the world is filled with color, and the next, it feels gray and still. When someone you love dies, it can feel like all joy has drained from your heart– and you wonder if it will ever return.
Jesus understood that kind of pain. In John 16:22, He was speaking to His disciples just before His crucifixion, preparing them for the sorrow of losing Him. But He also gave them a promise: “You will grieve now, but I will see you again.” He wanted them to know that their pain would not last forever, that joy would one day return.
Grief often begins with shock and disbelief. You can’t quite accept that the person you love is gone. Then reality settles in, and the ache deepens. For some, anger surfaces– sometimes even toward God. “Why did You let this happen?” “How could You take them?” Those emotions are real and valid. God can handle every one of them.
But as time passes, something else begins to happen. Slowly, the rawness starts to ease. You begin to breathe again. The memories hurt a little less, and acceptance begins to take root. That doesn’t mean you stop missing the person– it means you start to heal.
The Bible reminds us in 2 Corinthians 1:3–5 that God is “the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.” He meets us in our deepest sorrow so that, in time, we can comfort others who are hurting too. God doesn’t stand far off when we suffer– He comes close. He grieves with us, just as He grieved when His own Son died on the cross.
If you’re walking through grief right now, hold on to that truth.
You’re not alone.
God understands loss, and He promises comfort and hope for those who seek Him. One day, because of Christ, every tear will be wiped away, and joy will return again. Hold onto this hope in times of grief.
