“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.’”
Genesis 2:18
In a culture where marriage is often distorted, discarded, or delayed, God’s original design of one man, one woman for life can seem old-fashioned or unrealistic.
But Genesis 2 reminds us that marriage is not a human invention—it is God’s idea, crafted with purpose from the very beginning. Before there were governments, schools, or even the Church, there was marriage. That should tell us something about its sacred significance.
God saw that Adam was alone and said it wasn’t good. So, He created Eve as a “helper suitable for him.” That word helper isn’t a put-down; it’s in Scripture. In Scripture, a helper is someone who provides strength, support, and companionship—a partner. God built Eve and brought her to Adam, just as a loving Father would give away His daughter. This wasn’t just a union; it was a divine match—God’s first marriage ceremony.
Marriage is meant to be a union of equals, each with unique roles that complement the other. In a Christ-centered marriage, the husband loves sacrificially, as Christ loved the Church, and the wife supports his leadership, rooted in mutual respect and submission to Christ. This isn’t about male dominance or the wife being inferior to the husband—it’s about living out God’s design with humility and trust.
So, whether you’re married, single, divorced, or longing for marriage, ask yourself: Am I willing to trust God’s designs over a culture’s definition?
His design isn’t about control.
It’s about thriving.
