I love the candle lighting service in our church’s Christmas Eve celebration. With lights turned off, we light a single candle. One by one, as everyone lights their own candles, that one small light spreads throughout the Sanctuary until the once dark room is full of light. It’s a wonderful demonstration of the power of light to overpower darkness. The same is true when it comes to spiritual darkness against the spiritual light of Jesus Christ. Jesus, the Light of the world, will always pierce even the darkest of days.

Many times in history, spiritual darkness has appeared overpowering and unbeatable. Take the 20th-century Marxist movement, for example. Gaining huge momentum in the Soviet revolution, it spread to China in their Communist revolution, followed by Cuba, Eastern Europe, and soon after, Southeast Asia. One after another; the darkness of atheism seemed unstoppable in overpowering the Light of the church. But by the end of the 20th century, the Soviet Union was no more and Eastern Europe became the birthplace of many fledgling democracies. The lesson in all this is this: Even though darkness might appear to win, it’s never permanent because the light of Jesus always overpowers even the darkest of times.

Of course, the greatest example of ultimate victory when all seemed bleak, is the cross. For a moment, it appeared that the devil had won. Until three days later, the Light returned – never to be snuffed out again. For, in the end, the Light of Jesus ALWAYS overpowers the darkness.
