A watchman is a guard or a sentry watching out for trouble and subsequently warning others when that trouble is approaching. In this passage from the book of Ezekiel, the Lord assigns the prophet the task of warning God’s chosen people of a message coming from God. It is a warning of judgment to come if God’s Word is not heeded. Scripture goes on to say that if the watchman shirks his duty and fails to warn, then he shares in the fault of those experiencing the consequences. If the watchman warns but his warnings are ignored, he is not accountable and has done his job.
This is not just a story from long ago. It is a pertinent and relevant instruction for us today. The universal church … all true believers in Jesus Christ as the risen Son of God … have been assigned the responsibility as watchmen of the Word of God. We are to express its warnings of judgement as well as its promises of hope and salvation to a careless world. To stand idly by and assume that is someone else’s job is a dereliction of our Christian duty.
The comfortable position in today’s culture is often to remain silent on matters concerning God and Jesus. Many embrace the mindset of everyone finding their own way to salvation, that there may be many ways to identifying how to do that even if we personally don’t believe it. I mean who wants to be called a bigot or intolerant? But by shying away from what God has said is being a silent watchman.
The true believer in Jesus Christ defends and upholds the full teachings of the Word of God ... not just what we like or is acceptable in our PC culture. In our world today, there is a full out attack on diluting, discounting and even abandoning what God has said. Are you willing to sound a word of warning at the water cooler at the office or in the bleachers at some sporting event or wherever the opportunity presents itself to stand up for what God teaches in scripture? Yes, it will take courage. The watchman sounds the alarm while the Lord says, “the battle is Mine.”
The mission of Right From The Heart is to announce this hope and promise of the love and forgiveness of Jesus to all that will hear and read this message. It is certainly our desire for all to come to know the freedom that is possible in Jesus. If you have questions about God, salvation or what it means to be a follower of Christ, please contact us. We’d love to help you along the path of finding security in Him. Be watchful. Announce the Good News! Join me in praying for courage and obedience to that duty today!
