““Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" - Luke 6:41-42

Hypocrisy. Every one of us hates it, yet it is all around us. So many times we are quick to judge the wrong in someone else while ignoring our own faults. Our society is riddled with hypocrisy, whether it be in government, in the workplace or in our churches. But hypocrisy always starts within the heart of the individual … in you and me. We often take the position of whatever is most advantageous to us personally, even when it means contradicting earlier actions. We may criticize or pull someone else down in order to feel better or elevate ourselves. Hypocrisy is really a normal human characteristic because of man’s natural penchant to sin. Pride is often the word carved upon that “log” in our own eye. Scripture has a way of painting vivid and accurate pictures of our lives.

The believer in Christ, however, has a new nature. Sure, we still fight the tendency to sin, but through the Holy Spirit we can overcome them. The key is surrender and trust. When we are controlled by the power of the Holy Spirit, “we can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). Notice the nuance there … it is Christ Who strengthens me, not ourselves. We can’t accomplish that on our own. We just don’t discipline ourselves or muster up the will to overcome some besetting sin. Zechariah 4:6 says, “…not by might nor by power but by MY SPIRIT says the Lord of Hosts.” We are destined to ultimately fail when left to our own flesh.

Are you tired of wrestling with life? Do you find yourself to be a hypocrite at times and not very proud of it? Try focusing on your relationship with Jesus Christ. Move to a place of total surrender to Him. What is so amazing about Jesus is you will find no phoniness or hypocrisy in Him. Get that priority realigned and you may be amazed at the conviction and humility that occurs in your own life to be more like Him in spirit and character. When your relationship with Christ is right, everything is right. The more like Jesus we become, the less hypocritical we will be. It is amazing how that works!

Right From The Heart recognizes life is not easy. The world continues to attempt to tug us away from our moorings in Christ. Be steadfast! Focus on Jesus.
