But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing." - James 3:8-10

The tongue is certainly a powerful organ in the human body. Among its many functions is to help manipulate our food for chewing and swallowing as well as to provide us a sense and taste through up to 4000 taste buds. The tongue also allows us to form words but beware… scripture cautions the tongue can be untamable, restless and poisonous.

How many times have you said something and immediately wished you could take it back? Sure, we can speak words that are good and wholesome but it requires a conscious and disciplined effort. Again, the Bible speaks of bridling our tongue (James 1:26) implying the need to control the tongue much like a bit in a horse’s mouth. Otherwise it tends to run away on its own. Perhaps that is why we should heed the instruction to “be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger” (James 1:19).

Think for a moment about the statement “from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing.” We bless the Lord with our tongue, but then other times we curse men with that same tongue. Realize that person you cursed is made in the image of God just as you and I are. So when we curse our fellow man, we are indirectly cursing God! We are cursing His very own creation. We must THINK before we speak.

Even Jesus warns us in Matthew 12 that “for the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.” I am sure we all have noticed that our words do indeed reflect what is deep inside of us, especially in those private and alone times. Is it not so much easier to be an encouragement and blessing to others when your heart is filled with love and peace and patience? That is why we should be quick to repent and turn away from those sinful stains within our heart.

Right From The Heart will continue to pronounce the WORD of God to this world we live. That Word is trustworthy, right, and cuts as a two-edged sword. It is good for instruction, correction and exhortation. Be ready to offer a good word with your tongue as the Holy Spirit gives you even before you say it. Use praise, not pretense; build up, don’t tear down. Be the blessing, not the curse.

Thank you for continuing to support our ministry with your prayer and financial gifts. That sure encourages us! In the meantime, make your words count for good today!!

In Christ,
