Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” "- 1 Samuel 7:12 In Chr

Many of us have heard the term “Ebenezer,” but do you really know what it is? Scripture says Samuel took a stone and placed it as a memorial to the Lord for delivering them from the armies of the Philistines. Setting these monuments to remember significant events were not uncommon. Jacob remembered God’s promise to the Jewish people at Bethel in Genesis 28, and Joshua stacked stones to commemorate crossing the River Jordan into the Promised Land in Joshua 4. Commemorating historic events with a marker was a way to be reminded of God’s provision in a time of need. “Ebenezer” means “stone of help” or “remembering stone.”

You and I need to be reminded of God’s help and provision in our own lives from time to time. We may not pile rocks upon one another, but we may jot down the date and a significant event in a journal or even our Bible. We have birth certificates documenting the date we ventured into this world; we have various anniversaries noted on our calendar and even tombstones to memorialize the life of a loved one. These “Ebenezers” are good to mark such events, but also good for us to look back on in confidence that God was there then. Sometimes just remembering how the Lord was present and real in a certain situation in the past gives us hope that He continues to be with us now even if the circumstances are difficult. At the church I pastor, we have historical plaques around our facility to remember great miracles God has done in our church.

J. Hudson Taylor, missionary founder of the China Inland Mission in the late 1800s, had a plaque displayed in his home that read, “The Lord has helped us to this point, and He will see to it from now on.” That plaque was his “Ebenezer,” his “remembering stone.” What’s yours? One of mine was on a mountain top at a Young Life camp in Colorado when I was a teenager. There God helped me realize my need to fully trust him with my life. I have taken my wife, Anne, and later our three sons and most recently our four oldest grandchildren to that Ebenezer, so they could share in the legacy of faith.

There could be nothing more significant in your life than the moment you yield your life to Christ and accept His free gift of grace and forgiveness. It is an event that will last for an eternity! Remember it.

Right From The Heart is all about encouraging you to establish that marker in your life. God’s Word is true… absolutely true and dependable. It is upon the firm foundation of that Solid Rock your life can be built and remembered. Remember ... God is good.

In Christ,
