“And [Jesus] said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” Mark 6:31a

The context of this verse of scripture has the disciples reporting to Jesus all the ministry activity they had been involved with in the area. Jesus knew they must be tired, both physically and emotionally. So he encourages them to take a little time in a quiet place all for themselves. That’s great advice for you and me even today.

Life is certainly busy and hectic. Meetings to make, schedules to keep and things to do. “Make it happen” is often the mantra and goal of the day … after day … after day. Humanly, we can only push for so long before our mind begins to dull and our energy begins to wane. Collapsing into bed after a long day’s work is necessary for the physical body to recharge, but an otherwise emotional as well as physical respite from the everyday responsibilities is just as important. Oftentimes we simply need to “come away.”

God in His sovereignty even ordained for us a Sabbath rest every week. He Himself rested after 6 days of Creation as an example. And now in this passage, Jesus is encouraging a brief time of solitude and refreshment for those He loved. On occasion, even Jesus would withdraw from the crowds and busyness to pray and spend time alone with the Heavenly Father (v46).

Vacations are good but be careful to not vacation from your Lord. Instead intensify your relationship with Him through quiet reflection and focus. Intersperse some personal time throughout the other weeks of the year. It could be a little time every day or a couple of random days back-to-back. Just you and Him. There will be a new strength to be found for sure.

The everyday tasks remain before each of us. But a renewed sense of passion and fervor from a rested soul can work circles around anything. Right From The Heart will continue to promote the ultimate rest is knowing Jesus in a personal way. My prayer for you at this moment … wherever you are and whatever circumstance surrounds you to “Come away to Him and rest.”

In Christ,
