“Now may the God of hope fill you with all JOY and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. –Romans 15:13"

Joy. We all want joy, but what is it really? Is joy another word for happiness? Actually, in the English language joy and happiness are somewhat synonymous, but in the Greek there is a subtle difference. There, ‘joy’ is described as “a calm delight” whereas ‘happiness’ is more “well blessed.” It seems to me joy comes ‘from within’ and happiness is ‘because of.’ There are a lot of times when I am not happy ‘because of’ this or that. My happiness seems to be more of an external response than an internal reaction. Something usually must happen from the outside to provoke happiness within me. Whereas, the joy inside me wells up as a ‘calm delight.’ To carry our word study a bit further, the Greek for ‘delight’ means ‘satisfaction.’ I may not be jumping up and down or smiling from ear to ear all the time but inside there is a confident and calm satisfaction in knowing the King of the Universe in a personal way. My joy in this knowledge of Jesus Christ may be boisterous or it may be quiet, but it is always there. I know that I know, and that is JOY.

People strive to find happiness all the time. But you can’t really strive for joy. It is either there or it isn’t. The world seeks to fill that void in their heart with all kinds of things, but only the Presence of the Living God will satisfy that longing. He created us for Himself, so of course we are seeking Him … it’s just many people don’t realize that. How can a believer in Jesus Christ endure hardship, ridicule and even persecution and still maintain a calm delight and satisfaction? It is because the “joy of the Lord is my strength.” The believer has the gift of a peace that passes all understanding … a joy that satisfies.

My prayer for you today is that you will find joy in Christ and your hope abounds by the power of His Holy Spirit. Right From The Heart Ministries is dedicated to sharing this eternal joy found in Jesus Christ to a world constantly seeking happiness … only to find happiness does not last. Oh, but joy in Christ is forever, and it is yours for the asking.

His and yours,
