These words from Jeremiah 29 pack a punch! They are as comforting as much as they are a promise. We need to understand the background here. God’s people had become wayward in their obedience to maintaining a purity of worship of Him as the One True God. They were flirting with various idols and turning their backs on repentance despite the warnings of the faithful prophet Jeremiah. Now the Lord has allowed the Babylonians from the north to capture the city of Jerusalem and taken the people into exile away from their homeland. This exile, by God’s directive, would last 70 years!
God in His righteousness judges the people for their sinful ways but in His grace assures them of His continuing Presence. Despite the hardship that will be endured in the years ahead, the Lord reminds His people that He is still with them … call upon Him and He wi ll listen; seek Him and they will find.
Do you ever feel “exiled?” Perhaps it is a situation of your o wn doing or sometimes we suffer because of the bad decisions of others. Regardless, there are times when we are isolated, usually longer than we like, in order for us to realign ourselves properly with the Lord. Whatever our surroundings or place in life, we must “get right” with God knowing that even in our difficulty, He is with us and will provide that future and hope in His sovereign timing.
Notice that emphatic promise … seek Me with all your heart and I will be found by you, declares the Lord. The Lord knows your situation. He hasn’t gone anywhere. He does not abandon His own even during desperate times. But He does desire our complete dependence, allegiance and trust in Him.
At Right From The Heart, our mission will never be complete until this Goo d News is proclaimed to every tongue and every nation. Join us in that effort praying that God will make Himself known to a stubborn, self-serving world. He is indeed Lord and has a mighty big love for those who trust Him. He really is our only hope.
