Worry. It is easy to come by. We all catch ourselves worrying from time to time about work, finances, relationships or health issues. There never seems to be a shortage of things to worry about. But when you think about it, did the time and energy and restlessness spent on worrying change anything? I suspect not. Worry is typically an anxiety over things we really cannot control. Just like the scripture says worry does not add any substance to the matter at hand. Maybe our awareness and sensitivity to a particular issue is heightened by worry, but the outcome most likely remained as it would have been anyway.
We often hear the statement, “life is too short.” There are plenty of challenges to fill our time each day. We feel the responsibility to do a good job, to provide for our families and to honor our commitments ... and the pressure continues to mount. But we also need to remember there is not a big “S” on our chest either. Superman we are not … as much as we’d like to be. Obviously, we need to confront the obstacles in our path with determination and wisdom. We need to persevere under the leading of God’s Holy Spirit to do the best we can with what we have. But sometimes we simply need to take a deep breath and trust God to be our strength and our shield.
I am often amazed at God’s provision in life. Surveying the devastation of a hurricane’s path with unbelievable damage everywhere … trees stripped of their foliage, steel columns on billboards bent double and buildings absolutely flattened by the force of nature … yet little sparrows are flitting around chirping their curious song. Birds! God’s eye was on the sparrow and provided somehow for its safety during the storm. Scripture also reminds us of the splendor of the lily blooming in the field fulfilling its purpose right where it is. Yet how much more does God care for you and me? Set your worry aside and build on your faith. God is there every step of the way.
In fact, the next time that element of worry creeps across your mind, turn it into a prayer. And remember the millions of folks that may be encouraged by the peace of God through a faith in Jesus Christ. Right From The Heart is directing its energies there. Join us as we make the most of this day.
