“He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” – Matthew 12:39a
Here is a word for the person who says, “I believe in God. I’m religious. But I just can’t believe all this about Jesus rising from the dead. But maybe if I could just see a miracle, I’d believe.” Don’t kid yourself. Roman guards saw the resurrection of Jesus Christ and chose not to believe. The religious leaders who already believed in God engaged in a cover up just because they chose not to believe. Even though they had seen miracle after miracle, they chose not to believe.
You see, even if you saw a miracle, it would be hard for you to believe for several reasons. Most of all, your pride. You’d have to admit that you were wrong. But not only that, there’s the issue of giving up control. Nobody likes to give up control. If Christ really did rise from the dead, then He really is who He says He is. And if you’re going to go to heaven, He’s going to be the only way you make it. It would mean having someone else as your Lord other than yourself. And you like to be in charge. You like to be the boss, the lord of your life. That’s hard to do.
Look, if you’re determined not to believe, even if a man rises from the dead and walks into someone’s office, there will still be many in that office who would choose to disbelieve. Are you going to be one of those? Or are you going to be one who has the FAITH to believe?
