“For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2
You’re not who you used to be.
The patterns of your past may still tempt you, but they no longer own you. With the Spirit, you have the power to choose differently—to choose life. And when you stumble, the Spirit doesn’t accuse you; He lifts you up, reminds you who you are, and points you back to Jesus.
We love the word “freedom.” Freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom to live how we want. But here’s a question: what if real freedom isn’t doing whatever we want but being free from what destroys us?
Romans 8:2 tells us that through Jesus, we’ve been set free from the law of sin and death. That means the grip of sin no longer controls our lives. We’re not stuck repeating the same cycles, making the same mistakes, or bowing to the same temptations. Jesus broke the chain.
But this freedom isn’t just about avoiding hell—it’s about learning how to live. The Holy Spirit, God’s very presence in us, changes our inner “want to.” He rewires our desires from the inside out. Before Christ, we were slaves to sin. But now? We’ve got new power and new desires to be set free from sinning.
And yet, some still ask, “If I’m forgiven, why not just live however I want?” When the Spirit dwells in us, sin begins to lose its allure. It’s not about trying harder to do right – it’s about living differently through God’s power within us.
In short, in gratitude for what God has done, we desire to please Him over ourselves.
We can’t fight in our own strength. The Holy Spirit is not just BESIDE us—He’s WITHIN us, empowering us to live free.
And this is the truth that sets us free.
