In the Midst of Chaos, Trust God’s Sovereignty

“Daniel said: ‘In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea. Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea. The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched it until its wings were torn off, and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind of a human was given to it. And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of flesh!’ After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard. And on its back, it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule. After that, in my vision at night, I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast–terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.”
Daniel 7:2-7

In times of unprecedented disasters, like catastrophic flooding or an earthquake, it’s natural to seek understanding and assurance in the midst of the chaos.

This longing isn’t new; it’s deeply human. Reflecting on biblical passages like Daniel 7, we see that Daniel’s visions, while complex, remind us of God’s overarching control in times of chaos.

The first segment of Daniel 7 vividly depicts kingdoms rising from the sea, symbolizing the emergence of empires throughout history. These beasts– each representing different kingdoms like Babylon (now Iraq), Medo-Persia (now Iran), Greece, and Rome– illustrate the transient power of earthly rulers.

Yet Daniel’s vision extends beyond historical commentary.

It reveals a pattern of rising and falling powers, pointing us toward a future where God’s ultimate reign is unveiled.

The imagery of beasts with lion, bear, and leopard characteristics isn’t just ancient symbolism but a timeless reminder that human power, no matter how formidable, is fleeting. As adults navigating the complexities of modern life, this vision invites us to reflect on the temporary nature of political and social powers and to anchor our hopes not in human leaders but in the eternal dominion of God.

So, in today’s turbulent times, let’s find strength in the fact that God is in control.

By studying prophetic books like Daniel, we equip ourselves with a long-view lens to interpret current events not as isolated crises of chaos, but as part of God’s grand design.

Let this assurance guide us to live with hope and resilience, trusting in God’s plan for history and for our lives.
