“…keep the charge of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, according to what is written in the law of Moses…” – 1 Kings 2:3b
King David, upon passing the throne to his son, offered two pieces of advice. David’s first advice to his son, Solomon, was to “Be strong.” But that’s not all. He also encouraged his son to walk with the Lord. David’s concern for his son is not only that he be strong, but that he be a man of God, walk with God, obey the word of God, and that he be encouraged by Scripture. Most of all David wants his son to be a man of God, so he gives Solomon God’s formula for success. What is that? It is to obey the word of God; by doing so you will fulfill God’s destiny for your life.
As we look at this council of a father charging his son and we realize this could be a father’s council to any child — to be a person of God and to fulfill their destiny by understanding ultimate success. That means being in the will of God, doing the will of God, and doing what God has called you to be and do. Good advice for David to give Solomon. And good advice for you to give your child.
