“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.” – Matthew 9:35
One of the things that troubles me about evangelical, Bible-believing churches is the total neglect of one important aspect of Jesus’ ministry – healing. Why does this happen? Well, many Christians see exaggerated claims of supernatural healing in some charismatic or Pentecostal churches. Others see charlatan faith-healers on TV and say, “We don’t want to be involved with anything like that!” And sadly, in reaction against that, some Christians put their major trust for healing with medical science. They forget that doctors have never healed anyona! Doctors may enhance the healing process with the treatment they provide to patients, but only God can heal. Jesus went about teaching, preaching and healing and if the church, the Body of Christ, is to be like Jesus in spirit and character and mission we need$to do the same. How?
1) Pray for the sick through prayer meetings, prayer chains, and prayer ministries.
2) Have spiritual leaders like elders and ministers pray for the sick by laying hands on them in private or in worship. (James 5:13-16)
3) Ministry of presence: The Body of Christ (not just paid ministerial staff) is to reach out to the sick with love and compassion and encouragement.
If the church is going to be more and more like Jesus – let’s not forget the ministry of healing along with sound teaching and gospel preaching.
