How do you control or handle your possessions, your time, or even your family? First, let’s define three different categories of possession … owner, steward and embezzler: • Owner: the sole and authoritative possessor • Steward: an entrusted manager of someone else’s resources • Embezzler: one who takes the resources that are not his for his own use, breaching the trust of someone else; an embezzler is a thief.
Every one of us falls into one of those three descriptions according to scripture. God really does own it all; He created it all and is Sovereign over this earth and what happens in it. He has created man in His image, gifted him with talent, knowledge and ability. Truly, our blessings and prosperity ultimately are because of Him.
Mankind should acknowledge God as Owner and accept our responsibilities as stewards of what God has entrusted to us. We should manage our financial resources with responsibility, fairness and integrity knowing we are representing the Owner. We acknowledge God as Owner by regularly returning the first fruits to the “storehouse” or church, or a minimum of a tithe (10%), of all our increase. But instead, many must be identified as embezzlers … taking what is not “ours” breaching the trust of the One who expected His possessions to be properly managed. Malachi 3:8 actually speaks of us robbing God when we do not acknowledge Him through our giving.
But it is so much more than just money. Did you ever consider your family to be a gift from the Lord? What about the skills and talents you have come about naturally? Were those not how God has designed you for His purposes? Are you trying to control your life yourself or are you “stewarding” it as God has directed?
So what about your life? Do you consider yourself the owner, the controller of your own destiny … a steward of the opportunity of what God has given you … or in reality, are you really an embezzler/thief of what God has done? The believer in Jesus Christ finds the way so much more meaningful and purposeful when we submit and trust in His Sovereign leadership in our life. Be a steward and see if God doesn’t “open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” God Himself challenges us to “test Him in this.” Will this result in prosperity? Not necessarily but a spiritual wholeness, peace and the assurance of eternity of righteousness with Him is guaranteed. Now that’s priceless.
