One of the most common myths about Christianity is that you have to be perfect and do everything right in order to become a Christian. That is completely wrong! In fact, the reason we need to have Jesus in our lives is because we are NOT perfect. The simple truth, dear friend, is we all make mistakes, and that is called sin. “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) In other words, none of us deserve His favor. It is only through His grace that we can be called children of God.
Wow, nothing could be further from the truth! God made it easy for us by sending his Son, Jesus, to earth as a man – a human being – so that we could identify with Him. Then, He asked His Son to die on a cross, taking all of our sins upon His shoulders, and then was buried in a borrowed tomb. But He didn't stop there. God raised Jesus from the dead, and He walked out of that tomb, conquering death forever! He did this for ALL of us. The Bible says, "For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was His plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus…he broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News.” (1Timothy 2:9-10)
That is not the truth! If you have the desire to become a child of God, the solution is simple. All you need to do is pray a prayer similar to this, but make it your own:
"Father, I know that I am a sinner and that I don’t deserve Your grace. But I am asking you to come into my life today, cleanse my heart, and make me more like You. I want you to be the Lord of my life."
If you prayed a similar prayer, you have just made the most important decision you will ever make. You have been sealed as a child of God and your name is now written in the Book of Life! You can be certain that after this life is over, you will spend eternity with God!
Now, the work begins as you seek out other Christians so they can help you can grow in your faith through the teachings of Jesus. If you don’t have a Bible, we urge you to buy one, perhaps a more modern translation, such as the New International Version, New American Standard, or the New Living Translation. The Bible is God’s guidebook for our lives. If you’ve never read it, begin by reading the book of John in the New Testament. It will set the stage for a better understanding of the prophecies and stories in the Old Testament, and will lead you through the fulfillment of those prophecies in the New Testament.
We’d love to know if you’ve made a decision to receive Christ into your heart. But more importantly, we encourage you to find a Bible-teaching church in your area and get involved. There is nothing sweeter than sharing and worshiping with other believers. Will you have problems in your life as a Christian? You bet. We live in a fallen world and we are still sinners, even as children of God. But, our advantage over those who don’t know Him is the assurance that He walks ahead of us, beside us, and behind us, helping us to make right decisions and loving us unconditionally.
