A VOTE FOR JESUS

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” – Mark 1:1

Just over seven years ago, President Obama stepped into the Denver Mile High Stadium to the adoring throng of 75,000 people. You could almost sense feel a sense of worship. Because more and more, when every new presidential election comes around, people are longing for a savior to clean up the mess that we’re in.

America has grown more and more desperate, and more and more lost – so much so that, as we are in another presidential election cycle, the leading Republican candidate, Donald Trump, who is seen by some to be the answer, no matter how bizarre or outrageous the statements he makes, his loyal followers just believe he can get it done. He will straighten out the mess we are in.

Interestingly enough, on the Democratic side, as Hillary Clinton is struggling with her emails, Bernie Sanders, a self-avowed Socialist, is surrounded by adoring fans, just like Donald Trump. His followers believe that maybe this guy can straighten out the mess we’re in.

Now, I don’t know what your thoughts are on politics, but I’ve got some news for you.  The reason we’re in the mess we’re in is because of my sin and your sin.  And there’s only one man who can save us from that mess, and His name is Jesus. Because, with our sin nature, we can only add to the mess in which we find the world today.

This is what the gospel is about. The gospel is good news that follows bad news. What is the bad news? The bad news is our sin really messes things up. It causes us to fall out of favor with God and causes us to be separated from God.

So, what’s the good news that follows bad news?  That Jesus Christ, the Son of God came to pay the penalty for our sin, to literally die in our place to face the judgment we deserve. The good news gets even better. After Christ died, God the Father raised Him from the dead, conquering sin and death, so that when you and I choose to be followers of Christ, we not only receive forgiveness of our sin, but we receive the gift of eternal life. That’s the greatest news anyone is ever going to hear.

I want to challenge you today. If you have not trusted Christ as your only hope for salvation and eternal life. Why not decide that today? No Presidential candidate can save us from the mess we’re in. Only Jesus can do that.
