Actually, Money Can Buy Happiness Jan 05 2009

"If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother." - Deuteronomy 15:7

Here's an interesting newspaper article I recently read. A research team at Harvard Business School has found that spending as little as five dollars a day on others will significantly boost your own personal happiness. A psychologist heading the study said, "We wanted to test the theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earned." So they had their subjects make a list of income as well as detailed expenditures, especially donations to charity and gifts to others. Then they rated their levels of happiness and there you have it - the more you spend on others the happier you'll be.

I'm not sure how much this study cost, but I think we could have saved them a whole bunch of money. In God's Word, Jesus has already said, "It's a lot more blessed to give than to receive." (Acts 20:35) Giving to God - giving to others - is a sure-fired way to a happier, more fulfilling life.

I agree with the spirit of this devotional and I have a feeling that he titled this particular devotional to make you stop and think.

I accept that scripture about it is more blessed to give than to receive. If we do it in the right way and manner God will bless us and he will give us a deep feeling of contentment for doing it. If we give to others and then brag about it then we get our rewards from those that we brag too. This self gratification will not last long, but when our blessings comes from God it will sufice us for a great while. God bless everyone and have a great day, after all it is the day that the Lord hath made.

The current picture at the top of the daily devotional is as uglier representation of winter as I have seen. Why not get a picture that shows the beauty of winter, not the ugliness of it? If you wish, I will be glad to find one.

I had the same reaction as Henry the first day this banner went up. It just seems cold and desolate. Quite a shock after the beautifal autumn leaves.

I enjoy reading the comments about the picture but I have to disagree. I think the bare trees show the uniqueness of each of God's creation. It also shows how God put order into our world by allowing for seasonal changes. He made these trees to have shade in the summer and to be able to soak up as much sunlight as possible in the winter. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to everything there is a season...I feel there must be others who find beauty in this picture of the touch of God's hand.

I love this picture. It represents the silent reverie of wintertime. It's a time where things are still and silent, waiting for the rebirth of spring. And besides, shouldn't we be paying more attention to the content of the devotions than to a picture???

No one consistently pays more attention to the content of the devotional than I. I do find it interesting how others react to the picture, because - as they say - a picture is worth a thousand words.

I have to agree with Janice and Champ. I love the picture. To me, there is a unique beatty in the white snow because of the verse in Isaiah that says that we will be whiter than snow.

I really don't care who likes or dislikes the picture. It is just a picture.

The winter picture is wonderful and a reminder that winter can be a time of slowing down, reflecting and preparing for spring. It also makes me think about how sometimes a person can appear or feel spiritually dead but if their roots are still alive and well then the outward appearance and feeling is only for a season.

This picture is taking on the significance of the famous ink-blot tests! I wonder how a psychologist would analyze our responses? BTW, I like the picture; it feels rather peaceful to me.

I guess I must be dumb, I havent even paid any attention to the picture until I read the comments. It doesn't matter to me but I can see both sides, myself I would love to see a picture of the North Ga mountains. RFTH should send someone up there for a few day's to find a good picture and while they are there, enjoy the beauty God has made. Are there any volunteers to make the trip?
