How Great Thou ArtDec 09 2008

"He is your praise; He is your God, who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes." - Deuteronomy 10:21

Swedish pastor, Carl Boberg, was enjoying a nice walk through the woods when suddenly, a thunderstorm struck. He sought shelter underneath an ancient oak tree and braced himself from the cold rain and wind. Then, as suddenly as it appeared, the storm subsided, leaving a clear blue sky and the gentle scene of nature at its most glorious. Boberg heard the ring of a church bell in the distance and a feeling of peace enveloped him as the words to one of Christianity's greatest hymns formed in his heart.

First popularized in the USA by George Beverly Shea, "How Great Thou Art!" (originally titled "O Store Gud" or "Oh Great God") has been recorded by hundreds of artists as diverse as Elvis, Charlie Daniels, Billy Preston, and Carrie Underwood. They - along with believers the world over - use these words to honor, glorify, and praise the Creator of the universe.

I encourage you to take a moment to read through the lyrics and make them your own today, praising and thanking our magnificent Creator for His marvelous love.

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook and feel the gentle breeze.

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in.
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

Every morning I have the most beautiful drive to work, about 35 minutes. I very often sing this song on the way with the words so befitting of all I see.How awesome our God is and how I love his son Jesus Christ. I wish for everyone to feel the holy spirit in all they see and to thank him for His ultimate salvation. Like the song say's, "And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in". It is mind boggling to me but how grateful I am for His mercy. May you all have a blessed and wonderful day. Praise be to God - jenny

I love this song. It is just as nice when you read it like a poem. This will last me the rest of the day. Thanks. - Keith R.

Amen Jenny. I do the same thing when I take my golden, Gabe, for his walk through the hills where we live. But this morning I am looking out of my hotel room in Boulder Colorado. It snowed last night. The Rocky Mountain view is fantastic. Oh how awesome is our God. How great was the love of His Son. How blessed we are to have been drawn to Him, and freed from the burden of our sins. - Grant

I often take distance walks, I have come to call them my prayer walks. I am first taken in by the beauty and the rejuvenation of flowers, trees and even birds singing to greet the new day and this song comes to mind and I start to either recite or sing the words and Praise God for it all. I pray for others as I walk and especially for those who don't know God and know that He is the One responsible for all creation and that includes us. God's Blessings - clarissa

I love this hymn. I sang this to my daughter when she was in the hospital NICU as a very sick newborn. Years later it would be the one song that I could count on settling her down on nights when she would have problems sleeping. I didn't grow up in the church, and when I first became a Christian I attended a contemporary service that used a band and praise songs. While there is a place for that, I think there is something special about the great hymns of the faith. I am thankful that I get to experience both in the blended service I attend now. - RickY

I especially love the part of the song that says:
When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook and feel the gentle breeze.
For myself, I find that nature brings me very close to God.

When we sing this song in Church, for the most part, I can only hum it, because I always end up with a 'big' lump in my throat. - Jan
