Inner Beauty Vs. Outer Beauty Dec 08 2007

"Your adornment must not be merely external...but let it be the hidden person of the heart..." - I Peter 3:3-4

The world puts a lot of focus on women's beauty: makeup, jewelry, clothing, and of course, the right hairstyle. And don't forget taking care of her body! Certainly, men are drawn to beauty in a woman, and women know beauty is power.

But God's Word says something interesting to women: "Let not your adornment be merely external--but let it be the hidden person of the heart." God's Word is reminding every woman that outward beauty is temporal, but inner beauty from godly character and spirit is imperishable. Think about older ladies whose countenance becomes more beautiful with age.

God isn't saying, "Don't be concerned about making the most of your appearance." You should, for I assure you, the man in your life wants you to be. But God wants women to remember the only type of beauty that lasts. He wants you to focus, most of all, on godly beauty that gives a woman lasting splendor that grows greater with age.

Part of this verse was left out of the quotation at the beginning of the devotion. It should read: "Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel." -- 1 Peter 3:3

This is further corroborated by Timothy:

"Women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array." -- 1 Timothy 2:9

So ladies, if you want to live according to the word of God you better get used to looking like plain Jane.

If I have inner beauty it is because Jesus lives in me; if I have or have not outer beauty it is because God made me that way for His purposes. See Romans 9:20-21 where it talks about that each of us who are made by God, like the pot made by the potter, should not question God or the potter. I thank God I was made for His use whether I be a plain Jane or a beautiful Belle.

It is interesting to note how some individuals try to score points to "prove" a point. You have to be very careful as to how you interpret the various passages in the bible. In this particular case, the emphasis is clearly on the inner beauty of a person. It is no good to stare yourself blind on the outer beauty of a woman. What is outer beauty anyway? It is highly subjective interpretation as to what really represents beauty. To me, the most important thing is that the person has a radiant inner beauty that is not transient, whereas outer beauty is definitely only of a temporary nature!

This is'nt saying women need to look like plain Jane at all it is saying that true beauty comes from with in. There are a lot of great looking people on the outside but their heart is blacken with sin and therefore their outward beauty is surpressed. On the other hand there are alot of people who are not that goodlooking on the outside but on the inside there is love, kindness and gentleness and the Lord is in their heart and when these attributes show through it make them very lovely people. These are the ones who brings true joy to others.

Erik, Do you live a Christian life or are you always trying to tear it apart so you justify not living one?

Erik, the Bible also says that to those who do not believe - the Bible's words are foolishness to them. By your own admission you fall directly into that catagory. To answer your question, no, I do not have a "problem" with God's Holy Word. But there is clearly a problem with a non-believer twisting the Word to fit his purpose. This passage is obviously about inner beauty in comparison with external beauty. Be intellectually honest with yourself and this post.

I truly agree with this devotional. I love the termininology "lasting splendor". We are all blessed to be getting older. Have you ever looked at a woman who is moving forth and years and thought of that woman as being absolutely beautiful? I think we all have. That is the loveliness of her heart which is filled with generosity, love, and wisdom. That is really beauty that lasts! Just think how gorgeous we are when we groom nicely and have the beauty within too! Awesome, I'd say! Thanks for this message.

For Goodness Sakes...Girls you just don't know how Gorgeous to us when you Love the Lord.

You are so Beautiful there are No Words to Describe...Talk about a Pearl of a Great Price?

There are no words to Describe a Woman who Loves the Lord...

Now, not being able to Recite the Five Points of Calvinism or being there for The Show.

But that Inner Beauty is so Strong it Stuns Us...

But see we have had to Learn Too Girls--We have had all that Other Stuff. To us?

That Love for God makes us love you? You cannot Believe.
