Earth Pains Oct 12 2007

"For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now." - Romans 8:22

Things just ain't what they're supposed to be. Consider man's violence against man, the animal kingdom's survival of the fittest, or pollution poisoning our air and streams. And it's incredible how the earth, with all its beauty and wonder, can become a destructive force against itself through earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, and floods.

The Bible says, "...the whole creation groans and suffers the pain of childbirth." See, in the beginning, before man sinned, everything was in sync. There was such peace on earth that even man and animals were vegetarians. There was no killing of any kind. But, now the earth has entered into a period that God likens to a mother giving birth, and, like childbirth, things will get worse before they get better.

All creation longs for things to be made right, and one day it will be - the day when Jesus returns. It will be a time of salvation and judgment. Judgment will be for those who are not right with God, and salvation for those who are. His arrival will usher in a new age of harmony and peace on earth. Won't it be great? If you're ready, yes. If you're not, no. The key question for you is, "Will you be ready?" The only way to be ready is through faith in Jesus Christ.

I dislike the word "ain't" it is a word that is generally used by the ignorant.

Yes, I agree that we have to come to Jesus to find harmony amongst our world and thus far. BUT this DOES NOT give anyone the excuse to not take care of the earth now. It was beautiful before and partly because of sin it is "polluted" now. Knowing God made this unbelievable, breath-taking earth. We should strive to protect it. Thanks for reading.

The reason for recycling in Mumbai is economics. They don't use ball point pens, they use old-style fountain pens. If you buy lunch from a vendor your food is wrapped in newspaper, not a special food wrapper.

Diane, I found it interesting that you seemed to get sidetracked by BW's usage of the word "ain't". I feel he used it in an appropriate manner and not in ignorance. It is understood by certain folks who are intelligent that the use of the word "ain't" gives added emphasis because the sound of the word is stronger than the words "are not". Is this awaremess only within certain regional parts of our country? Difficulties with understanding people from different regions and cultures will be gone in that time spoken of in this devotion. Language barriers are just one part of the "Earth Pains" of which Bryant Wright writes.

Regarding Diane's comments, I agree that many critics would regard the word ain't as a basilect as opposed to a acrolect. In other words, the word in quesion could be regarded as most remote from the prestige variety. However, this type of abbreviation has been in existence from 1778. It is a contraction from not only am not and is not but also is not, have not or has not. The word ain't can be regarded from frequency analysis as a colloquialism seldom found in formal writing. Ain't is increasingly used in a self-conscious way by speakers and writers for a deliberate effect. Accordingly, this contraction can no longer be regarded as a word only used by less educated speakers.
Having said all this, maybe it could be more useful to concentrate of the message rather than the grammatical aspect.

I note a few typos in my previous post. Sorry about that:-) I think that Jesus' return could also be a metaphoric expression meaning: At that time, all people will become aware of their connection with God. We shall no longer be prisoners of our mind. How wonderful it must be to become aware of the Presence, which is timeless. We then no longer will be stuck with our time-bound thinking in the past or future, which so often is the cause of depression, fear, violence and so on. We would then accept each present moment as is, without judgment or fear. By becoming aware, you will "rediscover" your real Being, your connection with a greater intelligence, God. Go out in nature and pay all your attention to the singing of the birds, the beauty of the trees and flowers, the rustling of leaves, etc. It is on these occasions that you temporarily stop thinking about the past with all its worries and happenings and the future with all its fears and trepidations. Try it, you are bound to experience a feeling of deep peace, even though for most, this will initially last only a few seconds at the time, before your mind tries to take over again with negative thoughts and so on.
